Health Innovation East Midlands (HIEM) visited leading healthcare manufacturer Urgo Medical, a leading East Midlands healthcare manufacturer, to see first hand how traditional British manufacturing and cutting-edge clinical innovation are working together to improve patient outcomes and deliver significant efficiencies across the NHS.

Chief Executive Nicole McGlennon and Commercial Manager Alison Mlot toured the company's manufacturing facilities, where medical hosiery continues to be produced in the UK using specialist expertise developed over decades.

HIEM supports innovative stroke technology deployment across Nottingham & Nottinghamshire’s stroke pathway

Health Innovation East Midlands (HIEM) has supported Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) NHS Trust and Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (NHFT) to adopt an innovative digital technology that improves the assessment and rehabilitation of stroke patients.

Stroke affects more than 100,000 people each year in the UK, with around a third of survivors experiencing long-term disability. This figure is projected to rise to 150,000 new cases annually by 2035 (King et al., 2020), placing increasing pressure on services to deliver timely, standardised care in line with national guidelines.

National Cancer Plan highlights East Midlands innovation

An East Midlands initiative that helps identify and support women with a higher risk of developing breast cancer, has been highlighted in the new national Cancer Plan for England.

Launched by the Government in February 2026, the Plan sets out a major overhaul of cancer care in England, aiming for faster diagnosis, quicker treatment, and improved long‑term survival, with a target that 75% of patients diagnosed from 2035 will be cancer‑free or living well after five years.

New models of care to reduce mental health A&E waits

NHS England has published new guidance on the use of Ambient Voice Technology (AVT) in clinical settings, as interest in this area grows rapidly across the healthcare sector.

AVT enables conversations to be captured in the background without disrupting the clinical interaction. In practice, this supports real-time medical scribing, allowing clinicians to focus fully on their patients instead of on manual note-taking.

Community breast pain East Midlands toolkit available

The community Breast Pain Clinic (cBPC) is the first service of its kind in the UK.

It provides timely support for women experiencing breast pain not related to breast cancer, avoiding unnecessary patient anxiety and saving NHS resources by reducing the number of referrals under the 2-week-wait system.

Health Innovation East Midlands has supported the evaluation of this service, and the East Midlands Cancer Alliance have launched a toolkit for clinicians.

Chronic pain management groups in Derbyshire could be a model for others

HIEM has supported Derbyshire’s health system to review its new pain management groups.

The recent report reviews the impact of the 21 chronic pain support groups in the area. The groups are based on the ‘Lets Live Well With Pain Programme’ that has been developed locally, grounded in the ten footsteps approach by Live Well with Pain (LWWP).

The groups are all based in the community rather than in hospital and have all been adapted to suit their local area needs.

Successful wound care service rolled out in Lincolnshire

A wound care service in Lincolnshire has helped inform national evaluation of the Health Innovation Network’s Transforming Wound Care programme.

Lincolnshire Community Health Services NHS Trust implemented the new wound care pathway initially in its First Coastal Primary Care Network to deliver a specialist service to inhabitants, in their own homes.

It has proved so successful that it is being rolled out across the county. It was one of eight Test and Evaluation Sites (TES) included in the report.

A new co-produced tool has been developed to help mental health teams and service users to improve debrief conversations following an incident.

HEAR US has been created by the East Midlands Reducing Restrictive Practice Community of Practice. It’s a tool that has been co-produced with staff and Lived Experience Contributors. HEAR US highlights six key considerations that can enable debriefs to be more meaningful for patients.

Reducing waiting times for CVD services in Lincolnshire

We are proud to have been working with Lincolnshire ICS to introduce the first Lincolnshire Specialist Lipids Service covering both primary and secondary care.

The service has been in place for approximately one year and during that time, it has helped to reduce patient waiting times for an initial assessment with a lipidology consultant from 58 weeks down to 13 weeks.
