Join our free webinar on Wednesday 3 December 2025, 11.00am–12.15pm to learn more about the health inequalities experienced by the Deaf community,  and the practical steps that can be taken to make services, research and innovations more inclusive.

Deaf people remain one of the most excluded groups in society, facing barriers to healthcare that lead to poorer outcomes, including higher rates of uncontrolled diabetes and blood pressure, later cancer diagnoses, and increased prevalence of mental health challenges. (Rogers et al., 2024).

This session will be co-led by:

• Alison Jones, Chief Executive Officer of Communication Unlimited in Derby, who brings both professional expertise and lived experience of accessing healthcare as a Deaf person.

• Dr Anna Selby, Research and Postgraduate Manager at the Pulvertaft Hand Centre, Royal Derby Hospital, who leads on Patient and Public Involvement and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in two National Institute for Health and Care Research projects. She is also Chief Investigator for a study focused on reducing health inequalities in the Deaf community.

The webinar will provide insight into the barriers Deaf people face, guidance on how best to engage with the community, and examples of how their perspectives can improve services, research, and innovation.

Please note: the session will not cover clinical issues or interventions. The focus will be on engagement approaches. Attendees will also receive a copy of our newly developed Top Tips Guide for engaging with Deaf people.
