As HIEM is a hosted organisation, we do not have our own carbon reduction plan but fit in and support the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust’s Green Plan which aims to reduce carbon footprint, save money and benefit patients. Further details on our hosted organisation’s Green Plan can be found here.
Net Zero will be made possible through innovation and collaboration. As part of a National Health Innovation Network, HIEM supports and contributes to collective Net Zero ambitions and targets across all 15 Networks as well as shares case studies of our sustainability impacts from the programmes we support via our annual impact report here.
Working with other HINs across England, The Health Innovation Network hosts regular webinars on Net Zero topics with innovators from the forefront of sustainable practice. Already through the SBRI initiative, £6 million has been awarded to 18 companies that will help to make the NHS greener. These companies have developed new ways to improve patient care, while also saving the NHS money.
Health Innovation East Midlands is using its expertise to support the NHS to find, adopt and spread innovative solutions to address the climate crisis and make a more sustainable health system.
A new Net Zero Guide for Innovators has been developed by the Health Innovation Network to support businesses in working with the NHS towards its net zero ambitions. The guide brings together resources, a step by step guide and a self assessment checklist to help health and care innovators become sustainable businesses.
The NHS set out its ambition to deliver a ‘Net Zero’ National Health Service in its 2020 report, aiming to reduce its carbon monoxide emissions to zero.
The NHS is responsible for 4% of England’s total carbon footprint, contributing to increased air and water pollution, increased allergens and extreme heat. All of which can cause illness, exacerbate long term health conditions and lead to poor mental health (Jones, 2022).
As part of the Health Innovation Network, our search for innovative solutions and our expertise in helping them to be adopted across the health and care system can help the NHS achieve this vision.
