2025’s World Patient Safety Day is dedicated to ensuring safe care for every newborn and child with the slogan Patient Safety from the Start!  

This is at the centre of the national Maternity and Neonatal Safety Improvement Programme, delivered locally by the East Midlands Patient Safety Collaborative (EMPSC), part of HIEM.

Working with local hospital trusts, the team has supported Maternity and Neonatal work across the East Midlands that has helped to save up to112 lives (from April 2020 – March 2025) by ensuring timely interventions are in place.​

EMPSC works with maternity and neonatal teams across the East Midlands to share resources, good practice, skills and experience across key areas:

• Improving the optimisation and stabilisation of the pre-term infant
• Early recognition and management of the deterioration of the mother and new-born infant
• Perinatal culture and leadership
