Health Innovation East Midlands and West Midlands are jointly hosting a virtual Innovation Exchange event focused on helping people with a learning disability, who are at risk of behaviour that challenges, to avoid harm from psychotropic medicines. 

There are approximately 1.3 million people with a learning disability in England, with around 14% prescribed psychotropic medicines, compared to just 1% of the general population.  

While these medicines can be beneficial for conditions such as psychosis, depression, anxiety, and epilepsy, they also carry risks of side effects and reduced quality of life if not carefully managed. 

The session on Thursday 8 January 10:30am-12:00pm will bring together NHS and social care colleagues, innovators, and system leaders to explore how innovation can improve outcomes and reduce harm from psychotropic medicines. 

Innovation Exchange events provide a platform to connect health and care teams with evidence-based solutions that address key priorities. Aligned with the analogue to digital shift outlined in the 10-Year Health Plan for England, this session will explore how technology can enable more efficient and personalised care for those with a learning disability. 

Through engagement with national and regional stakeholders, four priority challenge areas have been identified where innovation is most needed. This event will showcase innovators who have solutions that: 

1. Improve shared decision-making and care planning 
    

2. Enhance multi-agency system working 
    

3. Support safe deprescribing of psychotropics 
    

4. Expand access to non-pharmacological support
