Following a ‘call to action’ to identify solutions to one of the East Midlands’ biggest healthcare challenges, three transformational projects are to receive a total of £300,000 funding which will assist with putting these innovations into practice.

With over 23,000 new cases each year, tackling Cancer across the region and efficiently meeting the growing demands which the disease places upon health services is a key priority for the East Midlands Academic Health Science Network (EMAHSN). Today’s announcement follows a recent region-wide ‘Innovation Exchange’ event organised by EMAHSN to bring together experts to discuss the challenge and identify innovative solutions. EMAHSN has worked with a range of representatives from the NHS, universities, patient groups, cancer charities and industry.

During July, NHS England is conducting a survey of all Academic Health Science Networks, providing a key opportunity for stakeholders to feedback on their experience of working with the AHSNs.

The information will be used to understand how the country’s 15 AHSNs can support the individuals and organisations they collaborate with, to deliver on their goal to spread innovation at pace and scale.

There are two surveys – one about the Academic Health Science Networks as a whole and another with some specific questions about the East Midlands Academic Health Science Network. People are invited to take part in either or both surveys.

Patients from throughout England are set to benefit from world-leading healthcare innovations developed in the East Midlands.

Following an international search, NHS England’s Medical Director Sir Bruce Keogh has today (Monday 6th July) revealed the 17 ‘fellows’ who will be part of the NHS National Innovation Accelerator programme.

The fellows have all developed world-leading health products, technologies and processes - including two developed in the East Midlands - that will now be rolled out at pace to theatres, hospitals and GP practices across the country, benefiting millions of people.

The fellows were selected from over 120 applications worldwide. To be successful they had to demonstrate that they are healthcare pioneers who have developed new ways of working that are improving the way patients are treated and cared for.

An eighteen month pilot scheme that provides online support to people in Derbyshire suffering from common mental health problems, such as work related stress, anxiety and relationship difficulties, has been launched by NHS Hardwick Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and the East Midlands Academic Health Science Network (EMAHSN).

Online support will be provided through Big White Wall, which has already helped more than 30,000 people, including thousands from the UK armed forces community, and is also supported by the Ministry of Defence, the Department of Health and Help for Heroes.

Big White Wall offers free, safe anonymous online support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from the comfort of your own home. There is a choice of safe therapeutic services, including self-help courses, also accessible online.

Organisations across the East Midlands are invited to enter an awards scheme that will showcase the incredible work of their staff to transform health and social care services for local people.

The second East Midlands Innovation in Healthcare Awards are launched today (22nd June) by the East Midlands Academic Health Science Network (EMAHSN) to recognise and celebrate innovation throughout the region.

Prizes are available across six categories and entries are invited from staff at all levels, especially those on the frontline and at more junior levels who have introduced changes to tackle problems and improve services.

SBRI Healthcare, an NHS England funded initiative to develop innovative products and services that address unmet health needs, today announced the launch of the latest SBRI Healthcare competition where up to 12 small business could each benefit from £100,000 Phase 1 product development funding. In this latest round, SBRI Healthcare will look to award a total of £1 million for ideas from companies focused on addressing challenges in older people with multiple-morbidities and specifically in the problem areas of: Falls, Incontinence and Decline in Functional Ability.

The Small Business Research Initiative for Healthcare (SBRI Healthcare) works with Academic Health Science Networks to identify priority areas where technology can be applied to address major clinical challenges. The programme focuses on clearly identified NHS needs, bringing clinicians and business together at an early stage to harness the expertise of SMEs to develop effective solutions. Companies successful in the six month feasibility stage (Phase 1) are eligible to move on to more detailed product development and NHS validation where up to £2 million in further funding support can be secured across two additional phases.

SBRI Healthcare, an NHS England funded initiative to develop innovative products and services that address unmet health needs, today announced the launch of its latest clinically-led competition which aims to help develop solutions that improve patients’ lives and support NHS efficiency. In this latest round, SBRI Healthcare is offering companies each up to £100,000 Phase 1 feasibility funding to develop products that reduce the current pressures put on urgent and emergency care services.

The number of attendances at A&E has risen significantly in the last decade putting pressure on urgent and emergency care services and increasing waiting times. 21.7 million visited A&E in the last year*, a greater than 30% rise in the last decade. More than 70% of hospital bed days are occupied by A&E admissions and 80% of A&E admissions who stay for more than two weeks are patients aged over 65.

SBRI Healthcare, an NHS England funded initiative to develop innovative products and services that address unmet health needs, today announced a further 11 companies will benefit from SBRI Healthcare funding this year in a competition to address challenges in older people with multiple-morbidities. Looking to accelerate the development and NHS adoption of new technologies, the £1 million phase 1 award will be shared by small businesses working in the priority problem areas of: Falls, Incontinence and Decline in Functional Ability.

The East Midlands Academic Health Science Network is urging Clinical Commissioning Groups to sign up to a pledge ensuring that stroke is kept on the local and national health agenda.

The EMAHSN Stroke Rehabilitation programme team is meeting East Midlands commissioners at an event [17 June 2015] in Nottingham.

The event; 'Reducing the burden of stroke in the Community – Commissioning for improvement' is being held at the East Midlands Conference Centre and will ensure that provision of care for stroke survivors in the community is reviewed by East Midlands commissioners.

The report "Spreading Innovation, Improving Health, Promoting Economic Growth" is launched today (3 June) at the NHS Confed Annual Conference and Exhibition in Liverpool.

It sets out a series of case studies from the across the AHSN network, which provide a snapshot of the organisations' work to connect the NHS, academics, researchers and industry to spread innovation, improve health and generate economic growth.
