The first care home awards from East Midlands Patient Safety Collaborative have recognised the achievements of care homes in the region that have excelled at ‘improved team working’.

Stephanie Turner, Manager of Tarry Hill care home in High Peak, was announced as the main winner at the ‘Connecting Together’ care home webinar on 6 April. Tarry Hill is a residential service offering support to people with learning disabilities. Stephanie was nominated for her skills in helping the team go from strength to strength, and increasing staff confidence in following personalised care plans, making positive risk assessments, and identifying subtle changes in the health of residents they care for. Since joining, Stephanie has taken Tarry Hill from an ‘Inadequate’ to a ‘good’ CQC rating.

Craig Attwood, Manager of Fernleaf Residential Home in Mansfield, was highly commended. His nomination said, ‘Craig is an excellent advocate for residents and utilises support from external healthcare services to obtain the best care for them. This home is not a care home but is a home that provides care – residents are happy and staff are happy – and where visiting professionals are welcomed.’

The East Midlands care home awards are part of the quarterly ‘Connecting Together’ webinars for care homes, and give the chance for anyone working with the care home sector to shine a light on carers and show them how appreciated they are, by nominating them for an award.

The theme for the July 2022 awards is ‘Improvement Leadership’ and a nomination form can be downloaded here. Entries close midday on 17 June.

The Connecting Together network of care homes is led by the East Midlands Patient Safety Collaborative, part of East Midlands Academic Health Science Network. It delivers the NHS national Patient Safety Improvement Programmes, including work with care homes to improve the management of deterioration – how to spot and manage when a resident’s condition worsens.
