Supporting our systems to improve patients care and outcomes by effectively identifying and treating patients with Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (an inherited genetic condition which predisposes people to extremely high cholesterol, which cannot be managed by lifestyle modifications alone).

HIEM will work with NHS ICBs, Trusts and Primary Care Services across the East Midlands to improve the offer to people with known or previously unknown high risk of cardiovascular disease. Specifically, it will aim to accelerate the identification and management of those with FH using innovative approaches to supplement current clinical assessment processes, underpinned by changes in pathways, and data collection.

Integral to success is the methodical application of NICE guidelines (CG71) as well as the national guidance for lipid management in relation to primary and secondary prevention of CVD. Imperative to both of these guidelines is the strong case for case finding and diagnosis, identifying people with FH using cascade testing as well as meeting the needs of patients and clinicians.
