Our innovations

The S-Press is a portable, therapeutic-level leg-strengthening device.  It offers adjustable resistance levels from 3kg to 20kg, targeting all crucial leg muscles needed for sit-to-stand actions.

The challenge:

Muscle deconditioning due to hospitalisation is problematic, causing delayed discharges, increased need for nursing, carer, and/or social service support following discharge, and possible discharge to a care home rather than the patient’s own home. Muscle deconditioning is associated with increased mortality, infections, and depression, and reductions in patients’ mobility and ability to engage in their activities of daily living. Preserving muscle strength and function should form part of patients’ rehabilitation plans. Progressive resistance exercise (PRE) offers the most cost-effective way of preserving muscle strength and function; however, it is not routinely implemented in most hospital settings.

The solution:

The S-Press device is designed to be conveniently used in bed or a chair, aiming to break barriers in in-hospital exercise and rehabilitation.

Five wards across community hospitals within Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (NHFT) deployed the S-Press as part of a 12-month demonstrator project funded by Health Innovation East Midlands.

The project focused on understanding the potential of the device to improve muscle growth and exercise capacity, which could transform rehabilitation and patient outcomes.

Impact and outcomes:

  • Staff and patients described that the S-Press was accessible, convenient and time efficient, portable and manoeuvrable, and provided an objective measure of progress
  • Patients using the device reported that it was easy to use, motivational and comfortable.  Some also reported greater confidence in their own ability, a sense of achievement and mobility
  • Patients with a range of reasons for admission can use the S-Press either in a chair, a wheelchair or a bed
  • Teams at NHFT are continuing to use the device with their patients
