SuperPenguin

An evidence-based digital platform providing personalised speech, language and communication support to families.

Problem

Children’s speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) affect around 10% of children, making it one of the most common developmental challenges. NHS speech and language therapy (SLT) services are facing very high demand, with referrals rising after the pandemic while workforce numbers remain the same. As a result, waiting lists often exceed 12 months. In the East Midlands, some waits reach 49 weeks for speech and language support and 64 weeks for autism communication assessments.

During these long waits, families often receive little structured support. General advice, such as websites and leaflets, is not enough, leaving many parents feeling unsure how to help. Without early intervention, children’s difficulties can worsen, affecting behaviour, social skills, education, and mental health.

The issue is made worse by a shortage of specialist SLTs. The workforce cannot grow quickly enough, and traditional one-to-one care models cannot meet demand. NHS trusts need new approaches that can support more families without increasing staffing at the same rate.

In the Midlands, there is also pressure to improve productivity while maintaining quality. Existing digital tools are either designed only for clinicians or provide generic content without strong clinical oversight or personalisation. There is currently no widely used, evidence-based digital platform that supports families at scale while they wait for SLT services.

Solution

SuperPenguin provides a clinically validated, personalised digital intervention that integrates directly into NHS SLT pathways and broader systems. The solution operates at key points in the care journey: while families wait for appointments, alongside active therapy, and after discharge to maintain progress and prevent relapse.

The mobile app delivers structured programmes tailored to the child's specific needs, covering early language development, speech sound, autism communication support, and stammering. Content is developed by experienced SLTs and follows evidence-based clinical frameworks. Personalisation is driven by an initial assessment that matches families to appropriate content pathways.

For clinicians, the platform provides a dashboard with engagement analytics, enabling them to monitor family progress remotely and prioritise clinical time for those with the greatest need. This triage capability transforms the traditional sequential model into a stratified approach where digital support serves as the first tier.

Implementation follows a proven pathway integration model refined across NHS trust deployments nationally, including the earlier Penguin pilot across 50+ trusts now incorporated into the SuperPenguin platform. Trust SLT teams receive training, clinical governance documentation, and ongoing technical support. The platform is configured to each trust's specific pathways and referral criteria, ensuring it complements rather than disrupts existing services.

Impact

The impact of SuperPenguin is measurable across patient outcomes, service efficiency and financial sustainability.

Benefits for families:

Immediate access to structured, personalised support from the point of referral eliminates the current ‘black hole' of unsupported waiting. Independent evaluation by Leeds Beckett University demonstrated statistically significant improvements in parental confidence, knowledge and ability to support their child's communicationdevelopment. Parents report reduced anxiety and a greater sense of agency.

Benefits for clinical services:

Therapists report that families using SuperPenguin arrive for appointments better informed and more engaged, reducing the number of therapy sessions required. Early indications suggest that for some families, the app provides sufficient support that further specialist appointments may not be needed.

Benefits for trusts:
Early health economic modelling by the University of Nottingham suggests significant potential annual savings for trusts by reducing demand for face-to-face appointments. A full economic analysis, to be published with the SUPPORT Study results, will provide stronger evidence to support commissioning decisions.

Benefits for the Midlands region:
Scaling SuperPenguin across Integrated Care Systems (ICSs) would create a consistent, evidence-based digital first step for children’s SLT services. This supports NHS productivity goals and the move from hospital to community-based care. It also improves access regardless of location and provides standardised data to inform system-wide decisions. Ongoing NIHR-funded research will provide robust evidence to support long-term commissioning.
