Cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) disease - the interconnected co-existence of heart disease, chronic-kidney-disease (CKD), diabetes, and obesity - is a rapidly-rising health challenge.
With prevalence expected to rise by one-third over the next decade, it’s projected to be the 5th leading cause of years of life lost by 2040, creating a major economic and social burden.
In the UK, CKD affects 7.2M people, diabetes 6M and cardiovascular disease 7.2M, costing the NHS £6.4Bn, £ 10Bn, and £7.4Bn respectively. CKM disease disproportionately affects deprived and minority communities, who are 5x more likely to develop it.
CKM disease has a significant impact on those who live with it, ultimately leading to intensive, costly treatment options such as dialysis or transplant. It places strain on both patients and their caregivers, impacting physical and mental health, financial stability, and overall quality of life. Patients often face debilitating symptoms and strict lifestyle changes.
Beam is a clinically-proven CKM-specific virtual rehabilitation app tailored specifically to help people living with cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic disease become more physically active and improve their lifestyle.
It provides live and on-demand exercise programmes, CKM-specific education and resources, clinical referral and health coaching and personalised care planning, and other forms of support.
The app captures data about a user’s stage of disease, treatment, comorbidities and current fitness, and uses this information to provide a tailored 12-week programme of exercise and education sessions.
Classes are delivered by experts in CKM health and those with lived experience of the condition.
Over 30,000 classes have been delivered via the platform, which features over 350 CKM-specific classes, a weekly live schedule, several signature programmes, plus a comprehensive CKM rehab intervention developed by clinicians at King’s College Hospital.
With programmes that address prevention, rehabilitation, prehabilitation for surgery, post-transplant weight-prevention, mental health, and wrap-around programmes for those on weight-loss medications, the new digitally-enhanced care pathway is helping to deliver coordinated and cost-efficient holistic lifestyle management care for all people living with cardio-kidney-metabolic disease.
The clinical trial showed significant improvements in self-reported health-related quality-of-life, mental health, and self-management behaviour from the patient cohort, improving:
In addition to these benefits, the intervention demonstrated significant cost efficiencies for the NHS, outlined in a health economic analysis that showed the average impact of the targeted 12-week programme was a reduction in cost of £580 per patient.
A return-on-investment of 1:6 was identified - for every £1 spent on the intervention, the benefit to the NHS is £6.
