June 22nd was the date of the first East Midlands Academic Health Science Network’s (EMAHSN) Business Intelligence and Analytics in the NHS and Social Care event.

Over 85 delegates attended the event at Trent Vineyard in Nottingham which included Analysts and Managers from around the East Midlands and beyond. The feedback on the day was that this was a resounding success, with attendees coming away enthused with new ideas on how data can be used to improve the care for patients.
The day was introduced by Professor Mike Hannay, Managing Director of the EMAHSN. Daniel Ray, Director of Data Science, provided an insight into the work of NHS Digital and highlighted how data is the new oil, but that it needs refining. This was followed by Simon Mortimore and Viviene Parsons from Southern South Central Ambulance Service’s information team who highlighted how they are using data to improve delivery of ambulance services. They were joined by Mark Ainsworth Smith, Pre-Hospital Care Practitioner, who explained the real difference this was making to patients he and his colleagues provide care for. The final session in the morning was provided by David Bolton, Senior Director of Qlk (who sponsored lunch at the event) and provided a fascinating insight into how data is being used in healthcare in the UK and across the world.

Attendees were able to attend series of fascinating workshops including Emmi Poteliakhoff and Jim Hatton discussing the Carter Review and the Model Hospital as well as Measurement for Improvement with Samantha Riley and Neil Pettinger discussing the role of NHS Data Analysts. The final morning workshop was led by Paul who outlined the work that AphA is doing. Val and Derek was also in attendance, greeting members and potential members. 

There was the option of attending a Qlik workshop or a panel discussion exploring how we can create data-driven health and social care organisation. The day concluded by a workshop exploring how we take forward analysis across the East Midlands, facilitated by Chris Hart, Commercial Director for EMAHSN

The event brought together national informatics leaders to the East Midlands and provided insight into up and coming data analysis methods and tools, as well as the opportunity to network and share ideas. One of the highlights for me was that we were absolutely delighted to have a large number of poster presentations outlining some of the excellent work that is happening in the East Midlands, and were very popular.
