We are proud to have been working with Lincolnshire ICS to introduce the first Lincolnshire Specialist Lipids Service covering both primary and secondary care.
The service has been in place for approximately one year and during that time, it has helped to reduce patient waiting times for an initial assessment with a lipidology consultant from 58 weeks down to 13 weeks.
A new video discusses the success of the service and the benefits it has brought for local patients and for wider CVD services.
In the film, Mo Bullen and Ruth Howard, Lipidology Nurse Specialists at Lincolnshire Community Health Services Trust, and at United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust talk about how the service was set up and the key to its success, as well as share valuable resources and advice to help people who may be considering setting up a similar service in their area.
The service has directly treated almost 500 patients, and many more beyond will have benefitted from revised pathways, guidelines for treatment and referral, and sharing educational resources and skills.
Working across hospital and GP care in Lincolnshire, the specialist nurses helped to run searches of patient records to identify patients most at risk who would benefit from their treatment being reviewed and managed more proactively by the new team. They also took direct referrals from hospital and GP teams.
Mo and Ruth worked across the health system to develop resources including a GP toolkit, clinical webinars and ‘Know your cholesterol numbers’ patient information cards among others – which are all discussed in the video and available in the notes to download.
The service has had a positive impact across the ICS and established a local pathway to help staff navigate primary and secondary care guidelines for treatment.
