Health Innovation East Midlands, as part of the Health Innovation Network, is hosting a webinar on Thursday 28 November, 12:00-13:00, focusing on informed choices for women from ethnically diverse backgrounds during pregnancy.

There are challenges in ensuring that diverse women receive culturally appropriate, evidence-based information that informs their decisions relating to their pregnancy. Black, Asian, and minority ethnic women face a higher risk of dying during pregnancy and childbirth compared to their White counterparts. Statistics show that Black women are five times more likely to die during pregnancy, while Asian or Asian British babies have a 73% higher rate of neonatal death compared to White babies.

Informed decision-making is key to personalised care. When done well, it helps patients feel supported and understand their options fully. This is a top priority for the NHS, which aims to ensure all women receiving maternity care are helped to:

• Understand their choices, including the risks and benefits
• Make decisions about their care
• Receive reliable, clear information in a timely and understandable format

Getting this right can significantly impact patient outcomes and experiences. This webinar will showcase the JanamApp - an innovative digital solution, specifically for South Asian women that can help to address these needs.

In response to these challenges, the webinar will showcase the Janam App, developed by Professor Angie Doshani, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at University Hospitals Leicester NHS Trust.

The Janam App is a multilingual pregnancy app designed for expectant mothers of South Asian backgrounds, aimed at addressing health inequalities. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about the app, its features, and how it has supported maternity services. The webinar will also include insights from a hospital trust that has adopted the Janam App.
