As part of our Innovation Insights webinar series and to launch our newly produced top tips guide, Health Innovation East Midlands in partnership with Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Refugee Forum, held a webinar to explore the top tips on engaging with Refugees and Asylum Seekers communities.
This co-produced session was presented by Deborah Wilson, Patient Public Involvement Engagement Officer, Health Innovation East Midlands, Debbie Royle, Deputy Director of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Refugee Forum and Halima Hamza, Interpreter and General Adviser for Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Refugee Forum, who has lived experience within Refugee and Asylum Seeking communities.
Refugees and Asylum Seekers face disproportionate health inequalities and are amongst the most marginalised and underserved groups in our society, as evidenced in the Assessing new patients from overseas – Migrant health guide (Gov UK).
Previous adverse life experiences, lack of access to public funds, poverty and social exclusion all have a negative impact on health and wellbeing. This, together with communication issues and differing cultural expectations of what services are offered and how to access them, are just some of the barriers.
The well attended session provided insightful tips on how to best engage with communities, ideas, first hand experiences and provided knowledge on how to deliver more effective and inclusive research, services, and innovations.
As part of the session, a resourceful Q&A segment with the leads shared rich insights and experiences from others working or supporting the health and care system.
