Health Innovation East Midlands announced the winners of the 2024 Care Awards at an event yesterday.
The winners, across six categories, were shining examples of care provided in Care Homes and in people’s homes across the region.
Winners were:
Health Innovation East Midlands Chairman, Martin Hindle said: “It was an honour to present the awards and meet the winners who deliver such valuable care every day to people across the region.”
Health Innovation East Midlands has worked with care teams for the last few years to deliver training on detecting deterioration early in residents and care recipients to avoid unnecessary hospital admissions.

Care Home Support Team of the Year
Highly Commended Award goes to The activities team at Oaklands
The Oaklands certainly know how to have fun, but the purpose of the planned activities is to offer more than that. Care workers believe that ‘tailoring activities to a resident’s personal identity helps them step into their shoes and better empathise with them’. There is a joint purpose through a range of experiences and activities to encourage and enable all residents to live their best possible life. Everyone works together, under the direction of the Activities Co-ordinator, to make sure this is achieved.
Winner goes to The Forget me Not Team at Ashfields Care Home
The forget me not team bring a high level of support, care, compassion and fun to those at the home who live with dementia. Training and experience means a high level of knowledge to support those with dementia and residents, family and health professionals comment that the support and activities that are personalised are second to none. They have the trust of their residents and are totally focussed on enhancing their lives, seeing this not as a job but caring for those they love.
Home Care Carer of the Year
A Highly Commended award goes to two people, Beth Hart from Home Instead and Emma Wright from Caremark.
Both Beth and Emma put their customers first, are highly valued by their colleagues and go above and beyond including using their own time to take clients on visits. Their commitment and commitment to providing outstanding care shines through. They are both mentors to colleagues
The Winner is Shilpa Jobanputra from Home Instead
Shilpa was a newcomer to care in 2019 but she was a natural from to word go! Shilpa goes above and beyond for her clients, pouring her heart and soul into every visit that she has. Shilpa is constantly thinking of her clients and how she can better their lives or make them laugh. Shilpa has now become our Community Liaison after volunteering to help us with some of our community work. Shilpa is also a strong peer who is always there for her colleagues and will help to support and guide them along the way.
Care Home Carer of the Year
Highly commended awards go to Mariana Dume from Rathgar and Rebecca Bryan from Red Roofs
Mariana’s dedication to providing exceptional care and support for residents is truly commendable. She consistently demonstrates a genuine passion for making a difference in the residents’ lives, making her an invaluable asset to our care home.
Rebecca is an extremely dedicated care home team leader. Residents she cares for and her colleagues, highlight her kindness and enthusiasm which is unwavering in the face of a busy or challenging day. She is a valued member of the MDT team and positively champions local initiatives.
The joint Winner goes to Denise Parry from Oaklands
Denise was nominated due to her work ethic and her person-centred approach to both the residents and the wider community; some of who also have learning disabilities and dementia. Denise setup a memory café with a wide range of activities that is open to the community as well as those living at the home. Denise is always fundraising for the home and provides prizes for activities she organises including bingo and pie and pea nights. Her colleagues say “Denise is just so approachable; her selfless attitude just makes you love her.”
She is dedicated, passionate, goes above and beyond often spending her own money on activities and residents. Her passion/vision for memory lane café is inspiring.”
And to James Punch from IBC Healthcare
James was nominated by a service user saying He is the most positive – committed - adaptable and professional support worker - carer and mentor I’ve ever had due to his attitude – approach – knowledge - ability and passion for role modelling best practice.
The quality and commitment James puts into his work as he spends every waking moment living - breathing and working with positive care in mind. James goes above and beyond in everything he does, and he supports in the community by being a member of support groups, volunteering at a disability disco every week, being on hand 24/7 for anybody that wants to talk about anything, helping families and individuals needing support and giving advice. He makes people`s lives incredible. He is always positive and professional with a unique outlook on life.
Care Home Manager of the Year
Highly commended awards go to Jane Borland from Rathgar Care Home and Dave Wint from Oaklands
Jane always goes above and beyond, not just for the residents but for staff too, Jane is always thinking of ways to help whether it was doing a food bank for staff with the cost-of-living crisis, or thinking of themed nights for residents to get involved in. Jane is also at the fore front of research that will benefit the residents in any way that it can
Dave has invested in his own training and is an accomplished manager and leader. He ensures that he makes every contact with experts count, by taking time to understand their ideas and consider how these could be used to continuously improve the care delivered to the people who live at the Oaklands. Dave has led a range of projects and pilots to enhance the lives and care of the residents he is particularly known for his weekly Disco night.
Winner Malik Mandai from Langdale Heights Care Home
Malik's journey into the world of care began during the challenging times of the pandemic. Malik's desire to make a difference led him to join Langdale Heights as an administrator. Recognising the potential for improvement, he swiftly rose to the position of Office Manager.
It was clear that his dedication extended beyond the residents. He understood that exceptional care encompasses not only the individuals in the homes care but also their families and the professionals involved in their wellbeing. With this holistic approach in mind, he created an environment where everyone would leave with a smile on their face.
Drawing on his extensive background in hospitality, Malik infused Langdale Heights with a level of service that is truly extraordinary. His experiences laid the foundation for his commitment to delivering exceptional care to every individual. Malik's high standards for himself and his team have set him apart from others, driving him to achieve personal and organizational goals that surpass expectations.
Recognising that the success of the home is dependent on its people, he has instilled a sense of confidence and dedication in the team. Through mentoring and ongoing support, he has created an environment where each team member feels valued and motivated to deliver exemplary service.
Care Provider of the Year
Highly commended Golden Years Support Services
Golden years have a strong emphasis on training and all staff are also end of life trained. The managers go above and beyond to support their teams and service users and particularly celebrate events such as Christmas where all service users are visited by Santa and his elves to deliver them a present.
Winner Bespoke Care
The management team put training at the heart of their work with real emphasis on care planning and end of life care. Staff go above and beyond to get to know the specific needs and wants of their clients, be it hairdressing, liaising with health professionals or staying with clients who are distressed. The management team ensure that these acts of kindness are recognised and rewarded. Knowing their clients so well ensures a high level of trust from both clients and their families.

Highly Commended Bankwood and Brookfields Private Nursing Home
Brookfields
Staff take part in activities alongside the residents, everyone has fun together. Long standing staff members provide a familiar friendly face to our residents which provides comfort and trust. We keep our residents ‘and relatives up to date with news and activities via the weekly Brookfields Bulletin and monthly Brookfields Banter. We support our staff with a shoe scheme. Regular activities include coach trips. For those destinations that are too far away, they arrange themed 'holidays abroad' where a video tour is watched and source food and drink from the country while displaying flags and other related items. We are also involved within the local community
Bankwood care Home
On a day-to-day basis, Bankwood feels warm and welcoming. Staff attitude is excellent and nothing is ever too much trouble. The leadership is second to none and the staff team clearly work well together with the sole focus to provide person centred care for everyone, tailoring their support to each individual accordingly. The happy environment enhances the experience for everyone but most importantly for the residents who live there providing a true home from home.
