AHSNs across the country will be starting the roll out of a new polypharmacy programme entitled Polypharmacy: Getting the Balance Right.

The Programme aims to support local systems and primary care to identify patients at potential risk of harm and support better conversations about medicines by promoting shared decision making.

The term polypharmacy often means when a patient is prescribed many different medicines for one or more health conditions; this can lead to potentially unintended consequences, such as hospital admission, adverse drug events, and non-adherence issues.

The work to kick start the programme is being introduced by AHSNs in different waves. With the East Midlands AHSN set to start the project in wave two (from July 2022).

We will be engaging with key stakeholders from July, but in the meantime, we are keen to hear from clinicians, patients and carers, or organisations with a key interest in polypharmacy especially if this is your specialist area.
