TCC-CASEMIX has been awarded £97k by SBRI Healthcare to support a historic drive to deliver a net zero NHS. 

TCC-CASEMIX model - PredictOR Carbon Analytics - will create a Carbon Registry that will provide clinicians, patients, procurement teams and surgical services managers with access to information on the carbon, energy and waste impact of surgical pathways.

Clinicians and patients will be empowered to make informed, shared decisions on treatment options, with a clear view of the carbon impact of each alternative.

The award is one of 10 in the first-ever net zero focused SBRI Healthcare competition, designed to bring benefits to patients and care service users, whilst reducing carbon emissions.  

Dr Matthew Bacon, CEO of TCC-CASEMIX said: “We are excited to have been successful in this award. This project will work to incorporate carbon emissions data from medical device manufacturers (such as artificial knees or heart valves for example) into our TCC-CASEMIX Cloud Services. This means that carbon emissions can be included as a factor in our simulations when designing new surgical pathways, which will provide health services with more information on which to base their service design and purchasing decisions.”

Mike Watson, Digital Lead at East Midlands Academic Health Science Network said: “We are delighted that TCC-CASEMIX has won SBRI funding to be part of this historic drive to help the NHS deliver on its net zero commitment. We have been working with TCC-CASEMIX over the past year and will continue to as part of our Digital Health Accelerator programme. It is a great example of using data to help rethink and redesign pathways, and it has the potential to provide new insights to NHS organisations as they seek to reduce their environmental impact.”

The projects will run up to six months, with the aim to demonstrate whether innovations are technically feasible and have an impact on carbon reductions.  

Innovations that can prove their impact and potential will be available to seek further funding for prototype development and evaluation. The long-term aim is for successful technologies to be adopted for use in the NHS where they can provide benefits for patients, the NHS and the overall community, whilst enabling the NHS to reach its net zero ambition.
