A second competition for artificial intelligence technologies to receive funding through the AI in Health and Care Award will open on 3 November.

Technology companies, researchers and developers will be able to apply for help to develop and test AI products which meet the strategic aims set out in the NHS Long Term Plan. The award forms part of the NHS AI Lab and is managed by the Accelerated Access Collaborative in partnership with NHSX and the National Institute for Health Research.

In preparation for the award, anyone interested in applying can download or join a series of webinars (27 and 29 October) explaining how it will be run. Full details are on the AAC website.

The NHS is committed to becoming a world leader in the use of AI and machine learning and harness the benefits, from faster and more personalised diagnosis to potential efficiencies in screening services or referrals from to secondary care.

In September, the results of the first round of the £140m AI in Health and Care Award were announced, with 42 awards made, sharing £54m. They included machine-learning algorithms to analyse breast cancer screening scans, AI tools to predict the risk of heart disease, AI powered apps that turn a smartphone into a clinical grade medical device and a wearable patch to detect irregular heartbeats.
