My background

I joined the East Midlands AHSN having worked for more than 20 years for commercial medical supplier companies.

The journey of innovators to move their ideas into products and then getting them taken up by the NHS has always been a challenge. In this role, I have interacted with innovators on this journey looking to help the NHS and patients. The chance to work with these individuals and companies as well as support the NHS system has utilised all the experience and knowledge I have built up over the years but has also been a great learning experience to finally have a unique insight into the NHS buying process and drivers.

What I have enjoyed most about the role

To be able to help companies and see them develop and grow has been exciting and fulfilling especially when you see the impact it has on patient treatment and outcomes. It is also great to work as part of a diverse team of individuals and to feel valued and respected. The opportunity to work with a whole range of external organisations for the benefit of the local region both from the NHS but also councils and trade organisations keeps the work interesting at all times. It is always great when you can see that people have gained real insight and benefit from an event you have delivered or hosted.

Why apply for this role?

If you are looking to find a role where you never know what the next thing through the door will be then this role will not disappoint and the colleagues within the East Midlands AHSN will make you very welcome. The Innovation Exchange and Commercial team work closely together and have a great rapport, all from diverse backgrounds but with a clear agenda to support local innovators to make the journey to the NHS market quicker.

Working for the NHS may feel like a big step change for someone coming from a commercial organisation, but it is not so different, and the skills transfer from one workplace to another and the daily interactions with new companies mean you are not too far away from the commercial world at any time.

There are regular opportunities to develop programmes and support events to help the entrepreneurs to fulfill their journey and it is great when you meet somebody new who has been referred on to contact you.

I would definitely recommend this role and working for the East Midlands AHSN!
