Over 370,000 people in the East Midlands received intensive therapy reducing the risks of heart attacks and strokes
One of our biggest priorities is focused on tackling Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) by the use of innovative medicines to transform the lives of patients in the East Midlands.
Our Lipid Management and FH programme improves the identification of patients and the treatment offered to people with Hypercholesterolaemia, including those with the genetic condition Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (high cholesterol that runs in families).
CVD is the leading cause of death in the UK (mostly due to heart attacks or strokes). Heart attacks account for 100,000 hospital admissions in the UK every year and costs the economy an estimated £19 billion each year.
This programme is aimed at adults with a known or previously unknown high risk of CVD. It provides a highly effective approach to implementing relevant NICE guidelines and includes innovative solutions to supplement current clinical assessment processes, optimising pathways, and the collection and use of data to support further improvements.
Several medicine solutions are included in this programme to address the different needs of patients, including High Intensity Statins, Ezetimibe, PCSK9 inhibitors, Bempedoic acid, and Inclisiran. The successful adoption of these within primary and secondary care is fundamental to the realisation of the benefits of the programme.
AHSNs across the country are supporting the effective implementation and evaluation of Lipid Management and FH detection as a national programme.
Locally, all Clinical Commissioning Groups within the East Midlands have engaged in the programme, with some organisations successfully bidding for NHSEI Pathway Transformation Funding to support the development of innovative pathway solutions and improvements.
