Communications – from another perspective

The EMAHSN communications team is advertising for a Communication Specialist - to lead the planning and delivery of our varied programme of virtual and in person events.

Communications Manager, Julie Warren gives an insight into what it’s like working at the EMAHSN.

I started working at EMAHSN in March 2021 – so, unbelievably I’ve already been here 18 months. And what a year and a half it has been – starting a new role in a pandemic when everyone was working from home was a bit daunting, but the team made it very easy for me.

I am seconded to EMAHSN from a Clinical Commissioning Group, where I had worked for a few years inhouse and via a Commercial Support Unit. After more years than I care to mention working in communications in the NHS, it’s good see things from a different perspective.

What does communication in EMAHSN look like?

Communications from an EMAHSN perspective involves keeping up to speed with all the innovation projects they are running across their teams – and there are a lot!

We support the programme teams to deliver these projects through targeted communications to stakeholders through the CRM system, events and via newsletters as well as more broadbrush social media and website, among others. Over the last year, the requirements for digital communications, videos and digital events has increased, for obvious reasons.

The innovation programmes we support cover a range of topics - they might be about discovering new products that meet the needs of our local health and care system priorities, and developing and evaluating new solutions, or they could be deploying solutions that have been shown to work already in other areas. It’s a lot to keep in mind but fortunately there’s a programme lead on hand to remind you of the details.

In addition to supporting the programme teams, we offer corporate support to the Executive Team, producing briefing packs and slide decks and Account Packs to help staff stay up to speed with all the programmes in each ICS area.

And finally, of course, there’s internal communications, supporting the Executive Team and the Operations Team to keep staff informed, and running bi-monthly Town Hall meetings – online and now face to face too.

What experience will I get?

The Events Manager will work as part of the Communications Team to support EMAHSN colleagues to engage with their many stakeholders both virtually and face to face. The teams we work with welcome ideas and support on how we can continually improve our events. It’s a busy, proactive team with plenty of projects to get your teeth into – and lots of good work to showcase.

Working here has given me an understanding of the wider health system – beyond the NHS and care itself – seeing how commercial providers can get involved and be supported to help us address some key health priorities and improve services for patients.

While we use many tried and tested communications channels such as social media, websites and newsletters, using the CRM to be able to specifically target people we have had contact with previously to let them know about new opportunities and programmes, allows communications to be much more specific.

The last year or two has seen a lot of service innovation and transformation out of necessity and being able to support this to continue to grow at pace is an exciting place to be.

If you’re passionate about healthcare, like working in a proactive environment and are keen to expand your knowledge and use your events management skills to focus on targeted stakeholder engagement  – we look forward to hearing from you. Good luck in your application!
