Breaking into the NHS - EMAHSN guide to NHS business cases

Chris Hart, Commercial Director, EMAHSN, emphasises the importance of a strong NHS business case and how a recently produced EMAHSN guide can assist in the preparation for an effective business case aimed at small and medium sized organisations.

When the NHS is interested in taking on board a new product or service it is likely that a NHS business case will need to be prepared and approved before the procurement of the project can proceed. From experience working alongside many organisations over the years we have recognised that organisations that supply the NHS are often challenged by the process and requirements.

A business case is essentially a proposal for a request of resource which includes things such as money, people or even time. One will be required when a proposal involves delivering something new, or making a change to an existing process. A successful business case will clearly outline the case for undertaking a project, consideration of the objectives and benefits plus the costs and any possible risks.

Our new introduction to NHS business cases guide provides an overview of a typical NHS provider trust and commissioner business case. The guide also gives advice on how a company can assist a NHS contact who is interested in a product or service to support in constructing and preparing a successful business case. The guide breaks down section by section what is required and why, and illustrates useful real life relatable examples.

I would urge commercial companies and third sector to take a look if they are thinking about working with the NHS to develop a business case. A good business case is usually the start of a long term business partnership; it’s something that is definitely worth doing well and getting it right.

Academic Health Science Networks (AHSNs) are a driver for spreading innovation and generating economic growth within the NHS. We want to encourage businesses and organisations to come forward to share new innovations that we can support. We hope that the guide provides valuable advice for those wanting to provide a new innovative product or service’s to the NHS. I would also welcome any feedback that people may have on this guide, especially if they have found it useful or if there are things we could add or improve.
