Optimising detection and treatment to reduce cardiovascular disease

Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) affects around seven million people in the UK. It is a significant cause of disability and is responsible for one in four premature deaths, with those in the most deprived areas almost twice as likely to die. In the East Midlands, deaths related to CVD for people under 75 are higher than the England average.

We have been supporting and sharing best practice, through our connections across the East Midlands, to share and enable new and effective approaches to detect, manage and optimise treatment for high cholesterol, hypertension and Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (FH) – reducing cardiovascular risk by preventing heart attacks, strokes, and dementia.

Our work included:

  • Creating resources for healthcare workers across all East Midlands Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) to help detect and treat patients with high cholesterol. Resources included webinars, podcasts, recordings of round-table clinical discussions, fact sheets and case studies. Access the resources here.
  • Working with the Midlands Long Term Conditions and Prevention Clinical Network, CVD leads within ICBs and other health leaders, to design local pilot schemes to improve FH detection. The pilots are anticipated to start in 2025.
  • Engaging with local health and care stakeholders indicated that opportunities for improvement and innovation remain. As a result, HIEM held an Innovation Exchange event focusing on CVD prevention, bringing together innovators with solutions to key challenges with a health and care audience.

As a result of our strong system and industry relationships, we will to bring together local systems, industry and community stakeholders to co-design and implement a CVD Renal and Metabolic Prevention programme to positively impact our populations.
